WORKSHOPS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL
Presented by Ron Mercer,
PhD, LMHC, NCC, BCFE
The following is a brief summary of a few workshops
provided in which training is specifically designed for administrators/managers,
instructors/teachers, guidance personnel, law enforcement and private industry.
I have consulted with Broward County Schools, individual corporations, law enforcement
agencies and other non-professional organizations as well.
Enhancing
Self-Esteem/Wellness Workshop - Focus on psychological theory of improving
self-worth through belief system shifts, nutrition, physical conditioning, and
improved interpersonal relationships. This workshop helps the individual explore
both their personal and professional well being and see how the two enhance or
deter them from each other. Participants learn the techniques in progressive relaxation
training and developmental play to increase spontaneity, clarity in thinking and
focus. Bridging
and Accepting Gender and Ethnic Differential - The primary focus of this workshop
is to initiate a sense of cohesion in the co-gender multicultural working environment
found within an academic, corporate or organizational environment. This workshop
helps both professionals communicate more effectively with each other by understanding
their unique and distinct socio/cultural differences. I utilize developmental
theory, by such psychologists as Jung and Erikson, to illustrate the adult life-span
process and how to navigate it successfully, for both men and women. I also use
my own Doctoral research on mid-life transition and culture to differentiate between
male and female orientations from young adulthood through later middle years,
the chronological sector where most individuals fall.
"Lifemasters"
- A focus workshop for men in which they will learn a specific life enhancement
formula developed by Dr. Brian Greer, a board certified Psychologist, and Ron
Mercer, PhD, LMHC, NCC, a men's issues specialist. The approach combines utilizing
Jungian perceptual theory and Eriksonian developmental theory to enable men to
see where they have unresolved energy-blocking conflicts and how to free themselves
from these psychological chains. Dr. Mercer's "Little Boy Lost", a semi-fictional
essay on the journey of a man in American society, will be available for purchase
during this training session.
For
Men as we Enter the New Millenium:
- Could
you be working "smarter" on your physical and emotional wellness?
- Could
you be a better father and/or husband/significant other?
- Do
you set goals and objectives and somehow get
thrown off track before meeting them?
- Are
you working harder than ever but not finding the time for quality and enjoyment?
- Do
you sometimes feel misunderstood and unappreciated, or on a different "planet"
than your
wife or significant other? - Are
you having a "Near Life" experience?
- Are
you feeling less passion and more negative stress?
Ron Mercer, PhD, LMHC, NCC, a men's issues expert and author of "Little
Boy Lost" and "Men-In-Pause",
he helps you explore ways of enhancing and enriching both your personal and professional
life.

The
"Art of Being Human"- An interactive workshop experience utilizing
music, movement, humor and play to help adults release growth-stopping inhibitions.
This workshop allows the individual to explore their own creative potential, both
as a person and a professional. It is an excellent format to be empowered at a
staff retreat, for example, to instill a new sense of teamwork, morale and cohesion
into the group.
"Magic, Wellness, Mayhem and
Men's Issues" - This learning institute's primary objective is to teach
participants a concise and relevant counseling method when dealing with adult
male patients. A secondary benefit for participants will be the opportunity to
assess their own attitudes and belief systems regarding male identity formation
and behavior within the social and family context.
The
program is based on the theoretical foundation of Eriksonian Developmental Theory
and Jungian Archetypal Theory. It also utilizes components of the presenter's
doctoral research on multi-cultural variables effecting mid-life crisis. Dr. Mercer
conducted a three-population study to examine the social forces which may contribute
to men experiencing decompensation during the middle years. His results will be
presented at the seminar. The target audience for this institute is any counselor
in the private or public arena who clinically treats men in therapy. A primary
learning objective is to teach participants the developmental/archetypal model
that has been constructed by Dr. Mercer with input from Dr. Brian Greer, a Board
Certified child and adolescent psychiatrist and men's specialist.
The
audience will be directly involved in this teaching model through individual self-assessments
of life developmental resolution and subsequent small group/feedback sessions.
There will be handouts regarding developmental and Jungian theory which will be
used as reference points for group discussion. Those individuals in the group
who fall into the 35-65 year age range will have the opportunity to evaluate their
mid-life adaptation through Dr. Mercer's mid-life inventory. There will also be
a participant guided imagery session and formulation of a five year plan for optimal
living. In addition to specific hand-out materials, Dr. Mercer will have copies
of his two post-doctoral publications. These publications are based on the developmental
theme; "Little Lost Boy" - a novel/reflection on the socio-cultural
family dynamics shaping the life and personality of a young man, and "Men-in-Pause"
- a satirical, serio/comic look at gender roles and male mid-life crisis.
